Health Education and Behavioral Science (HEBS)

Positions for Graduates

The Department of Health Education and Behavioral Science offers and MPH and two two doctoral degrees (i.e., Ph.D. and DrPH). The MPH degree provides training in generic skills necessary to become a Certified Health Education Specialist , as well as general behavioral science research skills. Graduates are equipped to provide theory-based public health education programming to diverse target groups and assist in the conducting and management of behavioral science research. Graduates work in non-profit, for-profit and public health agencies. Both doctoral programs of study have a strong emphasis on research methods and data analytic techniques, although the two programs differ with respect to their specific focus (i.e., research vs. program evaluation). Students pursuing the Ph.D. degree are trained primarily as researchers and academics and seek employment as university faculty members and researchers working in both the private and public sectors. Students pursuing the DrPH degree are trained primarily in the development, implementation and evaluation of behavioral health programs and seek employment as public health/behavioral health intervention administrators, and developers/evaluators of behaviorally based health intervention programs.
