Health Education and Behavioral Science (HEBS)
Organization
MPH
In response to the credentialing process implemented by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), the Department undertook a thorough review of the curriculum. The Department curriculum, in part, is based on the Framework for the Development of Competency-based Curricula for Health Educators. It organizes the practice of the health educator around seven entry level and three graduate level responsibilities, which are further subdivided into competencies and subcompetencies necessary for carrying out the responsibilities. Other documents and Department experiences were also drawn upon to assess and expand the Departments scope and content. The review provided an opportunity to assess the curriculum and make changes where needed to assure the inclusion of content and processes that meet the standards established by the NCHEC.
The Department has 15 required credits and 9 elective credits. Depending upon the students interest and background, the recommended elective courses may be chosen by the student or electives may be selected from the list of suggested courses for the Department or from the course listing of other department.
PhD or DrPH
The HEBS doctoral programs are based on the scientist-practitioner model, and provide balanced training in behavioral science and health education research and practice.
The Ph.D program prepares a graduate for a theory-based approach to behavioral science research. Emphasis is on training and research appropriate for academic settings. The DrPH program prepares the graduate for working in practices settings with focus on developing skills and research methods to enhance behavioral science applications in community settings.
