Concentration Competencies for the MPH Degree
Upon graduation, a student with the MPH degree in Biostatistics will be able to:
- Integrate relevant scientific background to design experimental and observational studies in biomedical, clinical and public health research;
- Use statistical computer packages to organize, analyze and report collected data;
- Apply basic probability theory and standard statistical methods to biomedical, clinical and public health research problems;
- Review and critique statistical methods and interpretations presented in published research studies, presentations or reports; and
- Communicate the results of statistical studies both in writing and orally to investigators and lay community members.
Concentration Competencies for the MS Degree
Upon graduation, a student with the MS degree in Biostatistics will be able to:
- Apply probability and statistical methods to design experimental and observational studies in biomedical, clinical and public health research;
- Use probability and statistical theory to identify appropriate methods of analysis;
- Conduct appropriate statistical analysis of data to solve medical and public health problems;
- Use a variety of statistical computer packages; and
- Communicate the results of statistical studies both in writing and orally to investigators and lay community members.
Concentration Competencies for the PhD Degree
Upon graduation, a student with the PhD degree in Biostatistics will be able to:
- Integrate relevant scientific background to design experimental and observational studies in biomedical, clinical and public health research;
- Use statistical computer packages to organize, analyze and report collected data;
- Demonstrate understanding of fundamental probability theory and statistical models to solve public health research questions;
- Apply new and existing probability and statistical theory to address public health or medical problems;
- Develop new statistical methodologies to solve new biomedical, clinical and public health research problems;
- Conduct complex statistical analyses for a broad range of applications;
- Review and critique statistical methods and interpretations presented in published research studies, presentations or reports;
- Communicate the results of statistical studies both orally and in writing to senior statisticians and other investigators; and
- Provide leadership for a team working on statistical analysis.
Concentration Competencies for the DrPH Degree
Upon graduation, a student with the DrPH degree in Biostatistics will be able to:
- Critically analyze statistical methodology in scientific literature;
- Design experimental and observational studies in biomedical, clinical and public health research;
- Implement, and be able to supervise statistical design of a broad range of biomedical, clinical and public health studies in diverse settings;
- Conduct complex statistical analyses for a broad range of applications;
- Communicate the results of statistical studies both orally and in writing to senior statisticians and other investigators, and lay audiences; and
- Provide leadership for a cross-disciplinary team working on the design and/or analysis of a research study.
