Degree Detail

DO/MPH Dual Degree Program

Application for this degree program is available through the campus office.

The UMDNJ - School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) and the UMDNJ - School of Public Health (SPH), Stratford/Camden Campus, offer a program leading to a dual degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and Master of Public Health (MPH). The program allows medical students to complete their DO degree and MPH degree in five years. Application to this program is limited to students who have already been accepted to the UMDNJ - School of Osteopathic Medicine and have taken the MCAT and who are accepted into the MPH degree program by one of its participating departments. Students admitted to this dual degree program would normally take medical school courses the first two years and would begin taking MPH courses during the summer between the first and second year. Between the 3rd and 4th year or after the 4th year before beginning their residency for the DO degree, students would concentrate on the MPH course work and start the fieldwork requirement. Students would complete the fieldwork requirement as a medical school elective in their 5th year of the dual degree program. While the expectation is that most students will complete both degrees within five years, they must complete the MPH within a seven-year framework. Although all students are required to complete 15 credits of core courses for the MPH degree, the remaining course work will vary based on the requirements of the department within the School chosen by the student.

Students selecting the Health Systems and Policy concentration could take courses on either the Stratford/Camden or Piscataway/New Brunswick Campuses. Students wanting another concentration could take the core courses on the Stratford/Camden Campus but would need to take required courses on either the Piscataway/New Brunswick or Newark Campuses depending upon their selected concentration.*

* The UMDNJ - School of Public Health grants six (6) transfer credits as electives for all dual degree students from professional schools (Allopathic and Osteopathic Medicine, MS Nursing, Physician Assistants and Dentistry) for biological basis of health and health promotion content in their professional curriculum. See transfer credits for details.
