Message from the Dean
Welcome to the UMDNJ-School of Public Health. Our School is built on the expertise and strong partnership of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ); Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (RU); New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
We are proud to be UMDNJ’s eighth School. The School serves a vital function for the State of New Jersey, as well as for students and health care professionals alike. It addresses public health issues and how these issues affect length and quality of life. At the same time, it provides an exceptional, high-quality education that is accessible, affordable and designed to accommodate today’s working professionals.
The need for public health professionals has grown proportionately along with rising population levels, industrial growth and rapidly changing health care delivery systems. The existence of public health, or a society’s effort to improve health through organized community action, has led to increased life expectancies and improved quality of life in the 20th century. As the new century unfolds, the UMDNJ-School of Public Health will maintain its leadership role in addressing society’s most pressing public health problems.
Public health education and research are integral parts of the missions of our sponsoring institutions. The School of Public Health confers the MS degree in Biostatistics, the MPH degree jointly with RU and NJIT, and the DrPH and PhD degrees jointly with RU. Established in 1998 as a statewide school of public health, the School was founded on a strong history of public health education with UMDNJ and RU that began in 1983 in New Jersey. We are delighted that NJIT has joined with UMDNJ and RU to support the nation’s first collaborative school of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.
Access to the School’s academic degree programs provides many possibilities to our students. You may apply for matriculation on the Newark Campus, the Piscataway/New Brunswick Campus, or the Stratford/Camden Campus, or participate in the School’s certificate programs. While any of these campuses will give you a strong fundamental background in public health, each has its own distinguishing features. The School also offers a number of international opportunities.
This website will guide you through the School’s programs. If you have any questions about the UMDNJ-School of Public Health, please contact the Campus Admissions Office in Newark at 973-972-7212, Piscataway/New Brunswick at 732-235-4646, or Stratford/Camden at 856-566-2790.
The faculty and I look forward to welcoming you to our School.
Sincerely
Audrey Gotsch DrPH CHES
