The Newark Campus evolved as a result of increasing interest in the public health field and growing relationships among the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), and Rutgers University-Newark in collaboration with the Public Health Research Institute (PHRI). The first class entered the UMDNJ-School of Public Health on this campus in 1999.
Relocating to Science Park and consisting of 20 world renowned research scientists specializing in infectious disease, PHRI will provide a teaching resource for courses in the epidemiology and urban health specializationツ opportunities for collaboration with MPH faculty, and a site for student team projects, internships, and employment. The presence of PHRI will allow students to study subjects such as the following: the epidemiology of nosocomial infections; social issues of infectious disease; economics and politics of infectious disease; the history of infectious disease; obstacles and opportunities in the implementation of infectious disease and public health programs; and the role of public and private sectors in control of infectious disease.
The Newark Campus addresses critical issues surrounding the nation's health, especially the health of high-risk, urban, and under-served populations. The Campus is situated in a city with a diverse population challenged with a variety of health-related needs that reflect complex behavioral, economic, social, and cultural factors. The scope of Newark's social and health problems renders the city an appropriate location for training health professionals to address these problems, to carry out researchツ and to formulate policies that answer local needs and provide models for similar nationwide and worldwide problems. Classes are offered in the late afternoons/early evening.
Important Announcement: MPH in Health Education and Behavioral Science will be offered on the Newark Campus in Fall 2009 (click for details)
